Hello, I have a question for you folks who take commissions. I was recently commissioned to draw a scene that included copyrighted characters from famous videogames. Since then I have been questioning myself if taking commissions whith copyrighted characters. So, do you personally draw commissions with copyrighted/famous characters? What are your oppinions on this?
All advice is welcome. I need your guide for my soul :3
I don't nor have I faced the situation. But if you decide to do it, you need to get permission from the companies owning the games as you are making money off of their characters. I think yoiu may be able to get around this by making the characters different enough...and maybe not stating that they were intended to resemble the characters?
I have never been commissioned for that kind of thing but I'd definitely NOT do it. I have no idea if it's illegal or whatnot but I'd just rather keep as far away from anything like that as possible! Just my thoughts on it!
Illegality isn´t something that really worries me; as it would be an issue between the commissioner and artist only. I´m more worried about the ethic aspects. Anyway, I posted this question in another site, and got some answers that have convinced me to say no to this kind of commissions.
But if the commissioners asks you to draw a determinate character, I don´t think he would be happy to see such an alteration.. Anyway, I decided I´m not taking this kind of commissions. Thanks a lot for replying.
